BITEWING RADIOGRAPHY

TOPIC: BITEWING RADIOGRAPHY

🌟IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

🔹Position of bite: The tab or bite platform should be positioned in the middle of the film packet and parallel to the upper and lower edges of the film packet.

🔹Position of film packet: The film packet should be positioned with its long axis horizontally for horizontal bitewing or vertically for vertical bitewing.

🔹Four sizes of the film are used in the bitewing radiography: size 0, size 1, size 2 and size 3 (27 × 54 mm).

🔹Horizontal angulation: In the horizontal plane, the X-ray tube head should be aimed in such a way that the beam is perpendicular to the teeth and film packet. It should pass through all of the contact areas.

🔹Vertical angulation: Positive 10° angulation should be used in the case of molar bitewing, and positive 5° angulation is used for premolar bitewing.

🔹Point of entry: The central ray should be directed through the occlusal plane of teeth towards the centre of the film packet.

🔹There are mainly three techniques available: simple film packet tab technique, simple film packet with film holder technique and reproducible film packet holder technique.

🔹Anterior bitewing: It may be necessary to take bitewing of anterior teeth to aid diagnosis. Vertical bitewing is taken in case of anterior bitewing.

🔹Vertical bitewing: It is used when the desired area is not seen on the film with normal bitewing placement. Bitewing tab is placed with long portion of the film in a vertical direction.

📌 Indication Of Bitewing Radiography :

🔸Proximal caries: It is very useful in the detection of dental proximal caries.

🔸Progression of dental caries: It helps monitor the progression of dental caries.

🔸Secondary caries or recurrent caries: It is helpful in the detection of secondary caries under restoration.

🔸Periodontal status: It is a very important tool in knowing the height of the alveolar bone and change in the bone.

🔸Calculus: It is used for the detection of calculus deposited in the interproximal areas.

🔸Relationship between the prepared cavity and pulp chamber: It is also useful in checking the relationship between the prepared cavity and pulp chamber.

🔸Overhanging restoration: It can show overhanging margins of restoration.

🔸Mixed dentition: It is also used to see the relationship between deciduous and permanent teeth in children with mixed dentition.

📌 Four sizes of the film are used in the bitewing radiography:

🔹Size 0: It is used to examine posterior teeth in children (22 × 35 mm).

🔹Size 1: It is used to examine posterior teeth in mixed dentition (24 × 40 mm).

🔹Size 2: It is used to examine posterior teeth in adults (32 × 41 mm).

🔹Size 3: It is narrower and longer and used only in case of bitewing radiography.
